The strong westerly gusts ensured a very hot pace to Hawes before riders turned towards Garsdale Head and into the teeth of the wind.
Despite a few patches of snow on higher ground, the route remained snow and ice free, which ensured riders would have to face the steep climbs of the Coal Road and Barbondale. Barbondale itself was transformed into a brutal wind tunnel that punished tired legs.
Despite the harsh conditions riders got round in good time and escaped the blizzard-like conditions that hit the area later in the afternoon.
